How Much?

The total amount awarded is based on many factors including the nature and severity of the injury and any consequential damages (e.g. loss of income). The amount awarded in compensation for a specific injury (excluding any consequential damages) is based on a set of national guidelines.

Remember - the figures shown are only for the injury itself and exclude "consequential damages" so the total you receive may be considerably more. Consequential damages can include expenses such as:  loss of earnings, prescription charges, travel expenses etc.
Head injuries: Compensation varies greatly from very severe brain damage(£165,000 - £235,000) through to minor brain damage (£9000 - £25,000). Facial injuries: fractures to frontal bones (£14,000 - £21,350) or to the nose/cheekbones (£1,000 - £13,500). Jaw (£3,800 - £26,500).

Hands: loss of a hand is treated like loss of an arm. Ranges from the "effective loss of both hands" (£81,500 - £117,000), to "trivial thumb injuries" (in the region of £1,250).

Wrist: for complete loss of function (£27,750 - £34,850) or for minimal displacement and a full recovery (£2,000 - £2,800).

Elbows: Varies greatly from "A severely disabling injury" ( £22,650 - £32,000) through to "Moderate or minor injury" (up to £7,375).

4. Pelvis
Pelvis: can be very serious and even result in leg amputation (see "legs" for details). "Severe" injuries (£22,650- £76,350) involve damage to other organs "Moderate" injury (£15,500 - £22,650) is when there is little permanent disability and little future risk.

Feet: both feet lost (£98,500 - £117,000) or just one foot (£48,850 - £63,625) or "Very Severe" (£48,850 - £63,625) where the injury must result in "permanent and severe" pain through to "Modest" (up to £8,150)

6. Legs
Legs: depends on whether both legs are lost totally (£140,500 - £165,500), or whether both legs are lost below the knee (£117,000 - £157,750). When one leg is lost, the award varies depending on whether amputation occurs above the knee (£56,000 - £81,500) or below the knee (£52,950 - £76,350).

Knee: Awards range from "Severe" (£40,750 - £56,000) which means significant disruption of the joint, to "Moderate" (up to £8,150) which could involve torn cartilage or twisting of the knee injuries

8. Shoulder
"Severe" injuries (£11,200 - £28,000) result in significant disability. "Serious" injury (£7,375 - £11,200) causes pain and weakness of grip while "moderate" injury (£4,575 - £7,375) results in discomfort with symptoms persisiting for about two years.

Internal organs: awards vary greatly from £550 - £122,000 depending on which organ has been damaged
