Record £11 Million Payout for Injured Passenger
A man who was left paralysed after a car crash has won a payout estimated to be worth £11.15 million. It is believed to be the highest ever personal injury settlement in the UK.
Wasim Mohammed, 22, was a front seat passenger in a car being driven by a friend. The driver, who was travelling at more than 40 mph in a 30 mph zone, was trying to overtake another car at a junction when it started to turn, causing Mr Mohammed’s friend to lose control of his vehicle and crash into a wall.
Mr Mohammed was left tetraplegic, with little function in his arms and none at all in his legs. He will require the assistance of carers for the rest of his life.
The settlement was reached shortly before the claim was due to be heard in court. Mr Mohammed will receive a lump sum of £4.25 million, together with annual periodical payments of £235,000. He has bought a house opposite his parents’ home so that he can be close to his family but still have some independence.
The driver of the car was convicted of careless driving and received nine penalty points on his licence.
